Poisoning
Plants to avoid
Although it is uncommon, dogs and cats can eat poisonous plants and make themselves ill.Rabbits too may nibble anything that looks green & inviting. If your garden already contains poisonous plants,or if you add more from garden centres, your pet(s) could be at risk.
Plants vary in their toxicity;many are irritant rather than poisonous.Make a list of all existing plants in your garden and check for poisonous ones. You may decide that a few irritant species will not be a serious risk to your catsor dog but it is unwise to let a pet rabbit wander freely in your flowerbeds until your are sure that ALL toxic plants have been removed.in the UK plants are divided into 3 groups according to their troxicity. Most good nurseries and garden centres will LABEL all plants and bulbs that are toxic or may cause skin allergies.

The lethal potential of Cocoa Shells Garden mulch! (remember COCOA....CHOCOLATE source!!) a young Weimaraner has died and her brother is seriously ill with toxic shock following them eating this substance which is used by many gardeners as a mulch. It is a readily available product in most garden centres and DIY stores, frequently advertised as an alternative to bark chippings or gravel. There is a small disclaimer on the packaging saying that it may be harmful to animals!! Not all our dogs are kennelled in their own "compounds" and many dogs have free access to their owners gardens. For those of you who have gardeners coming in to do your gardens (oh that I should be so lucky!!) do ensure that this product is NOT used; most professional gardeners will think about the garden first, the dogs second!! and do make sure that your puppy buyers are aware of this too and anyone else who may not know about this potential hazard to dogs.
